ABOUT BUSINESS CLIMATE LEADERS

Business Climate Leaders (BCL) is a group of skilled volunteers who engage major American businesses and business organizations in effective nonpartisan climate advocacy.  BCL is an action team of Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL). Given the urgency of the situation, it is vital that business leaders put their shoulders to the levers of change.  Dr. James Hansen, renowned scientist and director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University, puts it simply: “It is the captains of industry that have the power to save us.”

Our objectives

  • Engage businesses in advocating for an effective national price on carbon emissions

  • Help businesses advocate for a healthy environment in their communities

  • Encourage businesses to generally recognize the importance of putting climate on their lobbying agenda

Our Educational Mission

BCL helps companies get up to speed on carbon taxes, including how a carbon tax would affect their business and industry, and how it would help solve the climate challenge. By doing so, we help advocate for industry sector interests in the climate policy sphere.

We also help business leaders educate members of Congress about how their business is affected by climate disruption, what they are doing about it and what they would like Congress to do.

How businesses can get involved

We know that every company is unique and what it is willing, ready or able to do about climate policy may differ. For that reason, we’ve created a menu of flexible and varied actions for businesses:

  1. Endorse the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act (H.R. 763), a policy that will drive down America’s carbon pollution and bring climate change under control, while unleashing American technology innovation and ingenuity.

  2. Endorse BCL’s carbon pricing principles.

  3. Meet with members of Congress and explain your position on climate, the actions you take.

  4. Explain your climate position and the actions you take to:

    Your industry trade associations
    Local chambers of commerce
Companies in your supply / value chain
Consumers of your products and services
    Your employees

  5. Use traditional and social media channels to report on your climate position and activities, particularly in communities where your employees live and work.

  6. Maintain an on-going productive relationship with BCL and CCL.
